How to recognize bad or good advice?

In life, we constantly have to make a large number of different decisions, some of which are relatively insignificant, while others have the potential to change our lives. How to recognize bad or good advice?

The ability to make decisions is directly related to our ability to take responsibility for ourselves and our choices, so it can scare us. In an attempt to reduce anxiety and risks, we often seek help from people close to us or authoritative for us, but we do not always get reasonable advice. It is important to be able to recognize these warning “red flags” in advance.

Lack of experience advising

Bad advice can take many forms. Unfortunately, sometimes people who consider themselves competent in a certain matter, in fact, are not. If a person has not been in a similar situation and does not have the relevant life experience, most likely, his advice will be useless.

You should take a sober look at those areas of another person’s life in which you need advice (family, finances, career). If the bottom line is not what you would like to get, then it is better to look for advice elsewhere. In a situation with problems at work, it is unlikely to be appropriate to seek help from a newly hired intern.

Experience is subjective. How to recognize bad or good advice?

On the other side of the road, there are tips based on the life path you have traveled. In most cases, we tend to trust people who have experienced a similar situation. However, if a person has received an extremely negative experience as a result of a decision, this does not mean that you will face similar consequences. Just as someone who has successfully achieved his goal will be convinced of the opposite. But this does not mean that you will have the same favorable experience from interaction.

Both types of subjective advice may not be applicable to your circumstances. It is important to remember that each situation is unique, and the result achieved can be very different. It is worth considering both the good and the bad in each situation. A real assessment of what is happening is the key to making a decision.

Close people want the best for us. How to recognize bad or good advice?

As we have already found out, it is better to seek advice from a person who has been in a similar situation to yours. It should also be mentioned that if your relatives and people who are not so close to you say diametrically opposite things, there is something to think about.

Is this advice coming from people who are actively involved in your life? Is it enough to give you personal and worthwhile advice? People who really care about you deserve more trust.

Be prepared to hear what you would not want

Sometimes the advice received does not match what we expected to hear. At this point, we need to try to listen to the best option for us. When we are deeply immersed in solving our own problems, our vision becomes clouded and we build unjustified expectations.

It often happens that our loved ones see the right decision better from the outside. Do you want to open a beauty salon, but there is nothing to pay for the apartment? Are you going to stay in a toxic relationship just because it’s scary to change something? You can find a person who will push you to continue moving in this direction. But is it better for you?

If your consciousness tells you that this is bad, then most likely it is. How to recognize bad or good advice?

While making a responsible decision, try to remove external stimuli, concentrate on the problem and listen to your consciousness. Bad advice often leaves you feeling uncomfortable and dissatisfied, while you expected peace and well-being. Don’t try to drown out your intuition or move away from your moral values. Think about what you already know and what result you want to get after making a decision. Sometimes our consciousness is the best adviser for us.
